Samantha is a rising junior marketing major. She is our Philanthropy Executive Chair and spent the summer as a marketing intern at Boomerang Advertising LLC.
What relationships have you built with the people at your internship site: Because I worked at an advertising agency that represented clients, usually local restaurants, I was able to network with several business owners and their managers!
What was it like working with coworkers: My colleagues are near my age, and are all recently graduated from college, so I really enjoyed working alongside them. They each attended three different Ohio colleges and live in the area of the business (North Canton, Ohio), and I am confident that they will give me a great recommendation in the future!
What are a few things you can do to contribute to a successful career path at an advertising agency:
1. Take more classes emphasizing social media marketing!
2. Pick up a minor in graphic design (which I might do!)
3. Begin establishing an exemplary and engaging social media presence for myself
What was the culture of your internship site like: It was definitely a casual working atmosphere. It was a small office. We usually dressed business casual with "casual Friday", had an open working environment with desks facing each other so we were constantly sharing ideas and effectively communicating.
Does this fit with your ideal work values: I really appreciated the openness of the office, and felt very comfortable speaking my opinions and sharing ideas, even as the newbie! Communication is definitely something I value in a job.
Does this internship relate to your long-term career goals: I went in to this internship extremely open minded and willing to try new things, since I did not know exactly what type of marketing I wanted to make a career in. I worked mostly with the team doing social media marketing for several clients which entailed Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram post writing, some analytical research for performance summaries, and photography (which I did not expect to enjoy so much!) I would say that this internship related to my long-term career goals since I will undoubtedly be working with social media in any avenue of marketing going forward.
What lessons did you draw from your experience: Just because it was a small agency, it did not make it any less qualified to do a great job! I did not expect to enjoy the small working environment, but in retrospect, I think it was the perfect place for me to begin my marketing career. It was extremely hands on and gave me the confidence to speak up and engage with colleagues and higher-ups in a professional manner.
Sounds like you had a great internship Samantha!
